A Centimeters-long Sweetheart
"Hello, everyone! I'm BaDong!"
"My Titas Lui, Di and Joy gave me that name. It stands for Banana+Dong, my nanay and tatay. That's my most recent photo up there. I was 2cm at 8 weeks when they got that snapshot of me, and I got a very fast and regular and and healthy heartbeat. They even saw me moving crazily! Nanay was giggly - I looked like a moving gummy bear, she said. I must've been excited about my arms and feet growing! But I think I got tired shortly after and kept still for the picture. I don't know how big I am now, but I'm now 9 weeks old.
"This week, I've been making Nanay want to eat Mexicali. But the nearest store is in Alabang, very far away from where we live. Last Monday, she tried to check if Tita Summer went there for dinner on Monday night. They were meeting up after, so she was planning to ask Tita Summer to buy her a burrito. But Tita Summer ate at North Park. On Tuesday, she almost got her Mexicali because Tatay had dinner in Crimson Hotel in Alabang. But he was with his officemates and the Mexicali store was a good drive away, so he wasn't able to buy a burrito as well. On Thursday, Nanay called up Tito Astroboy Arvin, my Mad Scientist Tito who works in Manila but who lives in Los Banos, to ask him if he could buy her a burrito. But Tito Arvin was already on a bus to LB when she called. Nanay remembered Chong Yel is in Manila with Mamu, so she called Chong Yel next to ask if they could make a side trip to a Mexicali store somewhere. But they were already in SM Calamba when she called. So she asked Chang Ning to buy her a shawarma instead, the next best thing. But by Friday, Nanay still wanted some Mexicali food. So they went to Wheeler's Car Wash and Grill along Grove to buy some nachos, which Chang Ning said was good. But Nanay was annoyed because they used spaghetti sauce for the ground beef (the orangey-redness and the hotdogs were a give-away, she said), and cooked the whole thing instead of having the tomatoes and onions and cucumbers fresh. She was so annoyed she wanted to go back to Wheeler's and lecture them on how to make a more proper nachos. It's like when Tatay gets irritated with drivers who don't park their cars properly, and he wants to give them an award...
"I've been making Nanay want to eat many different things lately. Things she does like but didn't really make her dream and daydream about them for days... until I came along. Like barbecue, qwek-qwek that's sold near UP gate (because the orange cover is light and crisp), Dunkin Donuts, sashimi (but she can't, because it might have salmonella, which is bad for me), sukiyaki, sinigang na baboy, hotel buffet food (She had dreamed about this one night. The next day, she couldn't stop thinking and talking about wanting to eat at Vikings.), watermelon and, most recently, Mexicali.
"At first, Nanay would ignore the cravings. She tried to do the Dukan diet for their wedding, so she was used to ignoring "unreasonable" food cravings. (It's unreasonable when there's already food on the table, and if you have to drive somewhere for the food item, and if it's junk food.) But lately, she has been eating like a bird. That is, if she's eating at all. Most of the time, she would just munch on Skyflakes because she doesn't feel like eating. (She's still grateful that she doesn't have dizzy spells and vomiting unlike some nanays.) That's why when we visited Dra. Revilla last week and her assistant weighed her, we found out she lost 2+ pounds since we were there last. So now, she's drinking regular (not non-fat) milk every morning and giving in to whatever I'm making her want to eat. Except sashimi and salmon tartare. (Yum, yum!)
"Please pray for nanay and me. During our last check up, Dra. Revilla found bleeding in her uterus, below me. That's why she was feeling pains in her puson. So Nanay has been taking Duphaston, a pampakapit for me. She's not on complete bed rest, but she can't tire herself, stay up late and commute long distances. She also has UTI. She had wanted to just drink buko juice and cranberry juice and pansit-pansitan tea, but Doktora advised her to take antibiotics. Although it's safe for me of course, Nanay worries about taking in meds while I'm in her tummy.
"And please pray that we can eat like a Viking soon." (*parinig*parinig* for Mama Anita)
